University Laboratory School Official Name Change

On April 11, 2013, the Hawai‘i Public Charter School Commission approved our request to change the name of our school from The Education Laboratory: A Hawai‘i New Century Public Charter School, restoring our historic name, University Laboratory School. U.S. News and World Report Bronze Medal

U.S. News & World Report recently published the 2013 Best High Schools rankings. The University Laboratory School is again recognized as a U.S. News and World Report Bronze Medal School. The Best High Schools rankings, which are available online only, are produced in conjunction with the American Institutes for Research (AIR), one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world. Spring 2013 Distinctions

Golden Key National Award

Cole Oxe (8th grade) won a national award (American Vision) for his fiber arts piece "Field of Dreams." 13 other students and their art received Golden Key Awards, to be displayed as part of the National Scholastic Arts Exhibit in NYC. In addition, 12 other students and their art received Silver Key Awards, were on display at the Hawaii Regional Exhibit at the Hawaii State Art Museum.

Tournament Speech & Debate Team

Advisor and English Department member Mr. Bill Teter has earned distinction as a Second Diamond Coach in the National Forensic League. Under Mr. Teter’s instruction, students have earned more than 30,000 credit points through speech and debate presentations, competitions, and service. Mr. Teter will join a select group that will be honored at the National Tournament this summer.

University of Hawaii Regents Scholarship Award

ULS Senior Richard Huang has been selected to receive the University of Hawaii Mänoa Regents Scholarship Award. The Board of Regents established the Regents Scholarships to support students with a record of outstanding academic achievement. Twenty scholarships will be awarded every year. Regents Scholarships are awarded to 20 outstanding freshmen who receive an SAT combined score of at least 1950 on all three sections of the test or ACT combined score of at least 29, maintain at least a 3.5 GPA in academic subjects in high school, and whose extracurricular achievements are shown to be remarkable. Each scholar will receive a full tuition scholarship and a stipend of $2,000 per semester, plus a one-time travel grant of up to $2,000. The scholarship is renewable for a total term of eight consecutive semesters, providing that eligibility is maintained. Regents Scholars may be enrolled at any campus of the University of Hawai‘i.

UH Manoa Chancellor's Scholarship

Congratulations to ULS Seniors Espir Jon Ingasalo, Carley Kida, Nicolina Pascua, Jensen Tsuruda, and Kera Wong-Miyasato on being awarded the UH Manoa Chancellor's Scholarship. A maximum of 80 scholarships of $10,000 annually ($5,000/semester) will be awarded by the Office of Admissions to high-achieving Hawaii high school graduates. To be considered, students must meet the priority deadline for Fall admission, the Scholarship requirements, and be accepted to UH Manoa.

Requirements Include:

-  Admitted as a classified full-time first-year freshman to UH Manoa.

-  A 3.5 cumulative high school grade point average as calculated by the UH Manoa Office of Admissions.

-  A 1600 SAT combined score or 25 ACT Composite score (including the writing section).

-  Evidence of superior academic achievement or creative endeavor.

-  Record of academic, co-curricular, and community service activities.

-  Graduate from a Hawaii high school.

Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit® Scholarship Program

Congratulations to University Laboratory School senior Richard Huang who has been named a Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. University Laboratory School Principal, Keoni Jeremiah, awarded a letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Program to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

"Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation," commented an NMSC spokesperson.  "The young people recognized as Commended Students represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country as demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program.  We sincerely hope this recognition will provide them with additional educational outlets and motivate them in their pursuit of academic achievement."
